Hello. You’ve reached Time & Temperature.
Thanks for bearing with me as I power through the transition from tour to songwriting retreat to tour to songwriting class to home and then back on tour. It’s, as they say, a lot. And that’s excellent. I love all of it.
The 97’s East Coast run wrapped up beautifully with a final show at Tipitina’s in New Orleans. The band has one more week of shows this year in support of American Primitive, a November blast through Texas. I wonder if we will be able to get away with sneaking in a holiday song before Thanksgiving?
I’ll be in Dallas this coming weekend for my annual Breathe Easy benefit to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of North Texas. This year we are back at The Granada, which rules. It’ll be a song swap format wherein I’ll be joined onstage by North Texas music legends Sarah Jaffe and Vaden Lewis (of the Toadies), which is a hell of a lineup!
My New School students and the aspiring songwriters at my Songwriting Is Magic retreat and Dar Williams’ retreat where I guest-hosted last week are all writing such brilliant songs. I’m inspired, to say the least. And I’m using that inspiration to fuel my next project.
I’ll be recording some songs for a new solo album in Hollywood the first week of December with the man who produced my first solo album almost four decades ago, the one and only Murry Hammond! I’ve got a ton of songs ready to go but I’m actively trying to write some new songs that are EVEN BETTER than the three dozen currently sitting in the Dropbox folder. The quest never ends, nor should it.
I’m sitting on a couple of looming announcements. Stuff that spans the spectrum from thrilling to terrifying. I’ll let y’all know as soon as the timing is right. In the meantime, I’ll try and fill your Substack feed during the stolen moments between all these jobs—I may be working for the man, but I’m the man.
Please let me know (in the comments) what kinds of Substack content would best serve you, my friends. See you soon. Rock On.
yrs,
Rhett
Even reading about all of that is tiring! Do you have more hours in your days than I do? Seriously…
Maybe you could enlighten us on how you keep everything organized and not get burnt out? I wanted to ask you when you might get back on Stageit, but no worries, you have enough going on, I’ll be patient.
Thrilling to terrifying?? A short story collab with Stephen King?? Actually, a solo album produced by Murry is thrilling to me, but I doubt terrifying comes into that.
As to content, I love seeing Literary Rhett on here; Lyrical Rhett can be found on other media, but Substack has been the best place to see your prose/poetry, and tremendously enjoyable.
What do YOU get out of Substack, and want to get out of it? What do you find gratifying on here?
