I used to teach/ work at the New School 1999-2003. Be optimistic but Be careful. Don’t have any real Opinions about anything. That thing that your comedian friends have been complaining about? Yeah that’s true. I once remarked to my class that we wouldn’t be embarking to the upper east side- that is was the arm pit of NYC. No big deal right? Just an opinion. Well I offended one of the rich kids. They told their rich parents who complained to the schools president and I was reprimanded and asked to apologize to the class for shitting on the upper east side.

That was my last class teaching but I designed all their programs and promotional

Materials for 4 more years.

Have fun, you’ll do well - but remember you’re punk rock, so fuck em.

Lastly, on “how times have changed” when I was at ETSU (art school) i spent years trying to get into Rob Lawtons excruciating type Class. It was booked for years. There was a waiting list. He’d jump up on desks, yell at students, make them spend all day outside cleaning cars, burn students work and make them cry. We would kill to get that class. Everyone who took his class knew they’d get a job if they survived.

Oh I think it’s safe to say these days the kids are running the entire show;)

Excited for you, Rhett, and all the students who you'll be sharing this journey with. You always inspire, and this will be no different. Massive congrats! 💗🎈

Congratulations Professor Miller! As a teacher myself, I’d like to share with you a philosophy that my best principal ever shared with me and it hasn’t steered me wrong, as cliched-sounding as it is: kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Build relationships first and they’ll jump through a wall for you if you ask them to.

I can say from experience that you are a fantastic teacher. If all else fails, then you can fall back on the Socratic method and sing ‘em a few songs! In any case they are incredibly blessed to have your time and attention for an entire semester!

I’ve never seen “The Paper Chase” but as you seem to be recommending it, I might need to watch it now.

You will be a wonderful, inspiring professor, and your students will remember you fondly, and cite your words of wisdom decades from now. Trivial aside: In the horse world, a paper chase is a sort of fake fox hunt; a rider (the 'fox') lays a trail to follow for the riders in the hunt. Some are judged events, some just a recreational thing. I never knew there was a movie with a completely different meaning for the term. :) Best of luck to you!!

You’ll be great, and they’ll love you. Grading contracts work well for writing classes.

I have a very hard time imaging you going, “full Paper Chase”, but I’d like to see that! 🤣

I’m sure you’ll be great. The fact that care enough to try and are sincerely excited about it what you are teaching will, no doubt, shine through. Good luck on your new gig, but hopefully it won’t keep you away from Stageit, we miss you!
